On my machine I have ~1500 packages. I don't really care if a few are very large, but on the whole, they have to be pretty small. My SSD has limited space and I'd like to use it for things where IO performance is important for the tasks I'm doing. That random package I don't use that's pulled in as a dependency for a feature I don't even have enabled takes up space. E.g. if you use protobufs for C++, you probably don't want to pull in all of ghc so protoc can support haskell. You would rather use that space for ccache or something.
