I share this to underline that focusing on tighter gun legislation is reactive to a fault, missing the greater picture. It is ultimately misguided, treating the symptom (terrorism) rather than the cause (frustration, mental health, financial inequality, poverty) of much homegrown violence.
I wonder what's going to happen when any average Joe can build a bomb and a drone to carry it in his/her basement? Because we all know that's coming too, it's just a matter of time. This steady march of technological progress needs to be matched by economical and societal progress otherwise we're in for a very bumpy ride.
- rrauenza 7y agoLast week I was tempted to post this article, but since you brought it up... https://www.aljazeera.com/indepth/opinion/killer-narratives-real-culprit-mass-shootings-190813105024726.html https://www.aljazeera.com/indepth/opinion/killer-narratives-...
- qqn 7y agoThat was really neat, thank you for sharing this. Summary: the right blames religion/extremism, the left psychological/social issues. The author claims a third option, "narratives of insecurity", that spread kind of like Dawkins' idea of cultural memes [0,1]. I agree with him but I would categorize this as a psychosocial issue though, similar to "mass hysteria" [2]. - jakeogh 7y agoIt's going to end up as a DRM war. Places where one class is not allowed to have effective tools for preserving life will need to outlaw unlicensed replicators. Like speech, these same places will attempt to ban bootleg 3d models, not just weapons.
- weare138 7y agoI understand the overall arc of the point you're trying to make, but we have some of the least restrictive firearm laws in the world. If you can't legally buy a firearm in this country then you probably shouldn't own a firearm.
- whenchamenia 7y agoThe point is that more laws will have a diminishing effectiveness, while also impacting only those who follow them. How strict current laws are, anywhere in the world, is beyond the point.
- qqn 7y agoExactly. It's like that Antonopoulos quote, in this case about cryptocurrency: "I absolutely do do not question the authority to do this. I very much questions the means to do this." Src: https://youtube.com/watch?v=EZh1-ZqffOw&t=2m24s https://youtube.com/watch?v=EZh1-ZqffOw&t=2m24s
- tareqak 7y agoWhy does it only have to be the homegrown kind? The foreign kind could just as well have the same causes of frustration, mental health, financial inequality, and poverty. We are all human beings.
- qqn 7y agoOh, I meant homegrown as in amateur or home-made. Basically not regulated, irrespective of where it's made or used.
