Slack is bad if you use it bad!
At a fully remote company that I work at we have “quiet hours” in the afternoon where the expectation is that any messages in the channels are not going to be seen until the next day. Everyone is also encouraged to automatically enable Do Not Disturb for that time period. There’s also no expectation that DMs are immediately responded to. If it’s not a blocking issue, I’m happy to get a response the following morning.
- devmunchies 7y agoif your company has to have a time when you're not supposed to use it at all, rather than just using is appropriately, then yes it seems like a problem with the tool. Slack is junk food for positions that need focus (developers, designers). your time is smart to eat it less, but we should get something healthier.
- guntars 7y agoEh, it’s just a company policy that sets expectations and makes it work for us. I haven’t heard anyone complain about distractions lately and I definitely got interrupted more when I was working from the office.
- matchbok 7y agoI guess I always wonder how that is better than email. Once a channel has more than one conversation going on is becomes unusable.
