Ask HN: What home networking equipment are you using?
I’ve got a single Netgear RTAC66U router with a Synology DS218+.
The signal is a bit limited throughout my apartment so I was thinking of adding an access point.
What equipment are you using at home?
- brudgers 7y agoIf I needed to build up a wireless home network again, I'd just use old computers and Ubuntu. https://help.ubuntu.com/stable/ubuntu-help/net-wireless-adhoc.html.en https://help.ubuntu.com/stable/ubuntu-help/net-wireless-adho... Or raspberry pi's https://www.raspberrypi.org/documentation/configuration/wireless/access-point.md https://www.raspberrypi.org/documentation/configuration/wire... Setting up your own network sounds way more technically involved than buying a box off the shelf access points. It's a little more technically demanding but I found it rewarding and stable over the long term. I had two Buffalo airstations and an old WRT-54G all running continuously for several years until the WRT-54G was retired. The hardest part was overcoming the my mental model that routers are one thing and computers are another and that wireless networks require something that says "router" on the box. But an iPhone can serve as a hotspot. So that's an option too. Finally, a good solution for bandwidth issues on a wireless network is to use CAT cable instead of radio wherever possible...when wireless is a problematic technology, use something else.
