Counterpoint: you used Twitter to publish aggressively misogynist language, and by leaving it up, you continued to distribute hateful material. If Twitter is going to police hate speech, this the right kind of content, and "it was a while ago" is not really a defense when you're still distributing that content.
People often play the "it's not misogynist speech" game, but the first thing you did was to dismiss her based on her gender. Your fault here is more than "two party hate," and you still haven't owned up to your misogynist behavior in my opinion.
- metalliqaz 7y ago> "it was a while ago" is not really a defense when you're still distributing that content. I think you're missing the point here. It was published 9 years ago. He didn't continue "distributing" it, he published it once and Twitter distributed it for 9 years. The point, as I understand it, is that Twitter passively agreed that the tweet was just fine for their platform for 9 years. Then, after doing so, their standards changed. Fine, standards are supposed to change. However rather than simply delete the tweet, they suspended the account. So, in effect, "your account did something that is against the rules, before it was against the rules." I won't wade into the politics here, but I'm curious how you know that he dismissed her ideas because of her gender? Is there any reason to think that he would have embraced her ideas if she was a he?
- penagwin 7y agoThe other issue with it being published 9 years ago is that they may not even remember it existed (until they got their account locked). Who remembers what they tweeted 9 years ago? Are we all expected to constantly prune our tweets to conform to new rules? Can we even navigate through 9 years of tweets easily?
- Grue3 7y ago>how you know that he dismissed her ideas because of her gender? If Sarah Palin was a "he", he wouldn't have called her a "cunt" and a "whore".
- grenoire 7y agoLiteral millions call Trump dick, asshole, douchebag, and many other familiar slurs. Sure, there are swear words used primarily for a certain gender, but why does that matter? People swear all the time, no need to make it about the gender.
- mikelyons 7y agoI call male politicians cunts and whores all the time! How can you assume this?
- iomike 7y agoHe’s personally called me a cunt and I’m a friend. Tone policing him about a 9 year old tweet is ridiculous. Twitter has worse problems currently on their hands with the altright and Propaganda sources. My guess is that they’re trying to appear “equal” in their reports to Congress. So removing almost decades old post, like my friend’s, would make it appear they’re removing right targeted comments. It will make that spreadsheet move a tenth of a percent on an unread slide deck @jack can consume while he’s at a sweat lodge.
- sarah180 7y agoIt wasn't an attack on her ideas. It was an ad hominem attack: he called her a gender-coded name that reduces her to a piece of anatomy in a starkly vulgar way. People do this to women all the time, and they don't do it to men in the same way. You don't have to believe this for it to be true. And yes, he continued to distribute it. He put it in a content-distribution platform and left it there, despite the ability to take it down at any time. The fact that he never got called out for it before is not very persuasive to me, any more than "but I've been an asshole for years, it's not fair to call me out for it today." OP is probably not a terrible person, but this article is not what taking responsibility for your past bad behavior looks like.
- metalliqaz 7y agoDo you even remember what you put on Twitter, Facebook, various internet forums 9 years ago? I've moved on from nearly everything further back than 2 months.
- thatoneuser 7y agoIf you think that comment is misogynist I'd love to see you defend all the misandrist comments that are commonplace - even by mainstream politicians. Nothing about that is intrinsically misogynist, but sure the case could be made. But apply whatever logic you are to what's said about trump every minute of every day and ban those users the same. I bet you wouldn't.
