These stories are few and far between. Well-being checks happen routinely here in Massachusetts--it's a big part of a police officer's job. If you listen to a police scanner for an hour or two here, you'll probably hear several. I had a series of medical issues when I was in high school. On more than one occasion, police came to do a well-being check because I wasn't at school--they knew why, but they were still required to check. One time I did need immediate help and was taken by ambulance to a local hospital. These efforts do save a lot of lives--easily more than they take.
