Given the choice between a technical or culture interview, I'll take the technical one any day. For those that complain about them, are you really as good as you say you are? I support coding challenges, as long as they're reasonable and won't take too long to complete. If you'd spend an hour doing an interview, wouldn't it be reasonable to spend the same amount of time on a coding challenge? The best ones are done during the interview. No more time wasted.
