I think most people misunderstand why they were rejected. Most people interviewed are more than qualified for the job. I've interviewed countless people on phone and in person, and I rarely come across a candidate that's not able to do the job.
The real reason candidates get rejected is simply this: 5 candidates get interviewed and ONLY 1 can get the job. This is simple math. No amount of studying on the part of the candidates, and no amount of interview hiring competence can avoid this outcome: there is only 1 Job. The reason for all this is simple: a vast oversupply of qualified candidates. As more and more engineers get pumped into the market, this problem will only get worse. You can see from the 2019 developer survey, the ratio of 1-5 year devs vs 5-10 years, indicating the number of senior devs is increasing very rapidly.
