- mc32 7y agoDo you think “amassing” would sound better even if it described the actions on the ground more accurately?
- gerbilly 7y agoIf you are a military force, there absolutely is a concept of entering your own territory, going back to the Rubicon. When a country deploys it's own troops internally, as opposed to the police, it's often a forerunner to martial law or civil war.
- tus88 7y agoI would have been happy with deployed.
- RobertKerans 7y agoEnter implies attacking force, deployed does not, so deployed is not correct in the context of the article.
- cyberbanjo 7y agoDeployed to?
- loceng 7y agoWell, yes, language does have its inherent tone that culture adopts - "arriving to Shenzen" certainly sounds like a normal behaviour, however this seems anything but normal.
- baybal2 7y ago> The title makes it sound like Shenzen is not part of China. You don't "enter" part of your own country. Believe me or not, 10 years ago Shenzhen had a wall around it to separate if from the rest of the country. For all intent and purposes, SZ does feels like almost like a different country. Not to the same extend as HK, but still.
- RobertKerans 7y agoYes, you most definitely do. Be it for suppression ("British troops entered West Belfast", "The Syrian army entered Aleppo"), for removing occupiers ("French troops entered Paris", "Croatian troops entered Dubrovnik"), or whatever ("National Guard entered the Waco compound")
- tus88 7y agoBut aren't all those cases where the status of the city is unclear? Have I missed some news about Shenzhen?
- RobertKerans 7y agoThe city is a container, and a large paramilitary suppression force moved from being outside that container to being inside the container. I'm just a bit baffled here. A armoured paramilitary troops were deployed to the geographic area of Shenzen. Travelling in convoys, they entered the city of Shenzen, where they seem to be currently marshalled in a sports stadium. They are there as a direct threat and the assumption is that they will leave Shenzhen and enter Hong Kong to begin suppression
