I've heard a lot of people opine on why the poor do, in fact, vote against public benefits and for huge tax cuts for the rich. But the data doesn't back it up. Pretty consistently, poorer people tend to vote democrat, and wealthier people tend to vote republican. This was true in the last election, too.
