There is a drawback with Raspbian, while Raspbian itself is open source, the GPU code is closed source and you cannot debug it. What you can do is to reverse engineer the I2C traffic from Raspberry GPU to camera (that is one-way):

And you can hack the camera by injecting I2C commands to achieve effects impossible with the normal Raspbian camera software, like taking odd/even frames with different shutter speed:
