I've been getting these notifications now for a year at least. It's extremely annoying, and I haven't found any way to toggle it off. Such a colossal misfeature. I nowadays only use mbasic.facebook.com to check messages every two to four weeks, as FB is still kind of a backup contact platform for many people if everything else fails.
