Ask HN: Why Twitter don't show notifications in web interface?

Wondering why twitter don't notify me of a new follower or a new direct message while I am on the website, instead just an email ? That looks to me as usability fault. Would like to know reasons behind this practice. Anyone would like to shed some light on this ?
