I appreciate that you are trying to defend people who are doing their best, but I think overall that was an unfair and uncharitable comment. In my experience, homeless people act cringeing and fearful, and often call people Sir or Ma'am. It's pretty horrible to see someone's spirit broken that way. They aren't the people who need to learn gratitude.
