Major web browsers run on Windows (and even 32-bit windows!), where there is no overcommit, so malloc can return "no" any time, which happens quite often when you are limited to 4Gb of memory per process. The only apps that suck at this are Linux-only apps that are never used anywhere else and just assume that all Linux systems have overcommit enabled.
