I agree that the docs for pre-commit are hard to follow and badly organised. The other points I'm not so sure. I don't find it slow, or find the config verbose. Nor did it break output from commands in my experience (though I did have an issue where colorised output got disabled in a tool because it couldn't detect if terminal colors were supported)
