400 people at say 40k salaries or around 80k with benefits is around 32 million. Definitely a significant chunk of change, but barely scratching the surface for offsetting 1B in losses.

- dymk 7y ago> Marketing Manager > Average: $67,935 And that's for a manager. 40k may be a little low, perhaps they're making 50 or 55, but it's not unreasonable for a normal marketing job.
- yawgmoth 7y agoMarketing manager is often an individual contributor role. "I am managing our content." "I am managing our product marketing material."
- JMTQp8lwXL 7y agoIn the context of other roles, one would likely not assume this. For example, considering Engineering Manager. "I am managing our engineering." Could mean you're coding, but usually it means a team of coders.
- awad 7y agoMarketing Manager is not a manager of people but rather an IC role. It is the same as how Account Executive is not an executive in the organizational decision-making sense.
- CydeWeys 7y agoYou think Uber employees are only making $40k???
- mabbo 7y agoThe poor schmucks in marketing that are being let go? Probably. Dev salary aren't the norm, remember.
- CydeWeys 7y agoYeah but marketers at a high-flying startup like Uber don't make that little.

- phil248 7y agoIn most of the country $40k/year is a very reasonable salary for a full-time, mid-level office role.
- goobynight 7y agoMid-level? Naw. That's lab rat money. I'd say 5-10k more, so we're close, but that's a double digit percent difference from 40k.
- cortesoft 7y agoBut Uber is in San Francisco, which is not most of the country.
- phil248 7y agoTrue, but "The layoffs will affect multiple offices worldwide".
- DannyBee 7y agoThe all in cost is almost certainly 150-200k.
- Gibbon1 7y agoDoesn't really move the needle, chicken feed is chicken feed. 30 million, 60 million, 80 million. Point still stands.
- drstewart 7y ago10% isn't exactly chicken feed.
- user5994461 7y agoThey probably manage hundreds of thousands of marketing budget, in marketing campaigns that will stop or not be renewed when they are laid off. That's where the costs savings is. They might also have a small amount of shares as part of their compensation. Paper money that will never leave the Uber accounting book now.
- Traster 7y agoIt's probably more along the lines of "Each employee was on average earning $100k and was responsible for an advertising spend of $5m"
