You are correct in that they provide higher resolution than rectilinear displays (see the controversy tab in [1]), but they have largely fallen out of style because it is impossible to draw a straight line so everything looks blurry upon close inspection. One cool trick is that you can sprinkle in more efficient white pixels to allow the display to reduce its power consumption.
