I just signed up with AT&T for fiber internet. I'm one of the lucky ones. $73 a month including taxes for 1000 meg up and down. Unfortunately it's like pick your poison, do you pay Comcast or AT&T. I've got a dish on my house, I'll never use it. I'd take it down if it wasn't so high up.
- kevin_thibedeau 7y agoIn civilized countries people get 1Gb for $20. Then there's the question of why do you need that sort of bandwidth when a 4K video stream only needs 10Mb.
- post_break 7y agoCivilized countries are the size and population of two of the cities in my state. Have you not looked at a map? And 1Gb being symmetrical fiber means I can use my internet as a VPN or let friends and family use my plex server as my own personal netflix, or stream as much of the internet I want and not affect anyone else in my place.
- verall 7y ago4K video stream at 10Mb (mega-bits) would have nutso artifacts. It would look worse than 1080p or 1440p at the same bitrate. _Minimum_ I have seen passable-quality 4K is like 3-4MB/s so around 30Mb. That still looks pretty bad, even on HEVC. Maybe you mean 10MB/s (80Mb)?
- kalleboo 7y ago4K streams on sites like Netflix, YouTube, iTunes are all under or around 15 Mbit/s (and yeah, they look like crap, but when nobody is offering a higher bitrate stream, then that's still all the bandwidth you need) > It would look worse than 1080p or 1440p at the same bitrate Good news then, the 1080p streams are even lower bitrate (4-5 Mbit)
- verall 7y agoI went to confirm this, I get around 15-18mbps on youtube 4k, so yea no kidding. Quality is pretty impressive (for the bitrate..) with vp9, but blocking is still visible. Thank you for the info.
