I was not asking why the microphone permission is needed, but why it would be used with the app in the background, not being used. > I have pressed that voice message / microphone button by accident in the past App in the background. It's not due to a keypress or to do any user-initiated action. Googling it, seems it's not a one off and that the app does indeed access the microphone from the background from time to time to do god knows what
