In what way?
- dang 7y agoAggressive comments about violence take this community away from curiosity (its purpose) and provoke others into doing the same.

- staticautomatic 7y agoI think that's a totally unreasonable interpretation of what was posted and a totally unfounded fear. I hope you will reconsider your position.
- dang 7y agoI can understand how it would seem unreasonable, because we're likely looking at this from different perspectives. Having worked as moderators here for years, we're pattern-matching on countless instances of previous discussions and flamewars. From that perspective I can tell you for sure that the fear is not unfounded. We can argue about the meaning of language like "nothing will change until people start speaking a language that law enforcement understands: violence", "It took a few dudes with a box truck", "I don't know what it's gonna take", "it will almost certainly involve more killing", "law enforcement isn't going to get the message until something so over the top happens", "they can shove it back up their asses", and "that will hopefully provide the necessary motivation". But the point I'm making is on a different level: when people write that aggressively about an inflammatory topic, it has a predictable effect on internet forum threads. Mass behavior is more predictable than individual behavior in some ways.
- staticautomatic 7y agoWhat I don't understand is whether you think the post actually broke a rule or whether you were simply policing it out of fear of a future crime. I believe the latter is wrong. I say that as someone who's also moderated some high-traffic forums.
- dang 7y agoIt's not hard to see which of the rules in https://news.ycombinator.com/newsguidelines.html https://news.ycombinator.com/newsguidelines.html it breaks.
