That's not true, at least for humans. On a related note, I came across Nixtamalization recently. It's one of those stories reminiscent how the Royal Navy managed to 'forget' the cure for scurvy. It had been practiced for thousands of years in South America but when the western countries discovered maize they didn't understand why.
