I have a same era MBP, and I find it as fast or faster than a much newer, higher speced XPS 15 Windows machine. You must have had some hardware problem or even some rogue software that was killing your system. I load the hell out of my MBP, and it cruises right along. It's exceedingly rare that I feel a sense of slowness.
