Is abstaining from conspicuous consumerism virtuous? If so, there is virtue to be gained by not exposing yourself to the incessant, persuasive, and obnoxious advertisements of television. When I quit TV I stopped wanting/caring about having the newest/nicest model car (among other things), and gained contentment and peace of mind as a result.
