From what I understand, writing can be very lucrative but it is far from guaranteed income. It's like being an actor: sure you can make it big, but there are thousands of actors that don't make enough money to survive without doing other work.
From my vantage, it seems that the homeless community has gotten so large and so widespread that it could spawn and support its own economy. Is there anything that could be traded for services such as washed clothes, security patrol, food gathering, etc?
I keep imagining that assisting the creation of such self-supported services is something that the non-homeless could achieve. I would hope that this would scale naturally, and then naturally result in lifting these individuals out of homelessness. Meanwhile, it would mike homeless life much more comfortable.
Thoughts?
- DoreenMichele 7y ago"The homeless" are not some separate population here. You can't distinguish them from "normal people" like they are a separate species. People at risk of homelessness are, in a nutshell, people with barriers to regular employment. This includes people who are twice exceptional and the LGBTQ crowd. Ideally, we develop more resources for people who have trouble achieving conventional success as a means to lower their risk of homelessness. Waiting until after they are on the street to help them is the worst possible way to handle this. It's much harder to help people after their lives have fallen apart than to give them other options before it goes that far. Years ago, I homeschooled my two twice exceptional sons. I was Director of Community Life for The TAG Project for a short time. I was a low level presenter at a gifted conference that year. I have expertise in how you deal effectively with this stuff. But there's no effective means to put that information out there. I can't afford to do everything for free. It doesn't pay and the institutions we currently have are often part of the problem.
- patrickyeon 7y agoBecause it's a term I'm not familiar with, but you used twice, I looked up "twice exceptional". For anybody else wondering, it "refers to gifted children who have some form of disability."
- DoreenMichele 7y agoYes, though adults can also be 2e. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Twice_exceptional https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Twice_exceptional
- patrickyeon 7y agoMakes sense. Thanks for the correction.
