My personal bias had previously been shaped by the example of the the Susan G Komen for the Cure scandal. In my recollection they were hardly donating any of the funds raised. Perhaps I am mis-remembering at this point. Distributing food and clothes is much easier to do and measure than "cure cancer" so I'm not sure why I thought the outcomes would be similar.
