I always makes sense to roll your own X when you're a leader in the field and X doesn't exist yet until you (or somebody else) makes it and releases it. I've had a lot of situations like that and been accused of NIH syndrome, but what is the alternative…not doing something at all because nobody else has built or released something that can be used? Every library or tool in existence started out because somebody wasn't content with the status quo enough to bother inventing a new thing. This is the only way the state of the art can progress.
