I had an experience like this learning about rhyming words in school when I was little. "Hog", "log", and "bog" all rhymed, buy we couldn't figure out (not even the teacher) why "dog" (dowg?) sounded so much different. I was telling this story as a teenager when it suddenly occurred to me that I had a very strong accent.
