- cvoss 7y agoIt seems like NSF is working towards that. NSF-funded publications must be publicly available for free within 12 months after publication. NSF has a repository for this purpose. This regulation went into effect in 2016. https://www.nsf.gov/pubs/2018/nsf18041/nsf18041.jsp https://www.nsf.gov/pubs/2018/nsf18041/nsf18041.jsp
- jpeloquin 7y agoIn the US, the NIH has a public access policy since 2008, as required by law: > SEC. 218. The Director of the National Institutes of Health shall require that all investigators funded by the NIH submit or have submitted for them to the National Library of Medicine’s PubMed Central an electronic version of their final peer-reviewed manuscripts upon acceptance for publication, to be made publicly available no later than 12 months after the official date of publication: Provided, That the NIH shall implement the public access policy in a manner consistent with copyright law. https://publicaccess.nih.gov/faq.htm#753 https://publicaccess.nih.gov/faq.htm#753 Access the papers here: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/ https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/ The 12 month delay for public access shouldn't exist. Any discussion of a paper in the news tends to happen around the official date of publication because that is when the press embargo is lifted. The public deserves to have access to the original work then, not a year later. But everyone does eventually get access to NIH-funded work.
