I don't know when it changed, but California mandates time-of-use pricing for all commercial, industrial, and agricultural electricity customers. Residential customers can opt into ToU plans too. My uncle is on one because he is retired, so can set his own hours, but also likes to run electricity-intensive tools in his shop.

- WalterBright 7y agoEven better than ToU is having it priced minute-by-minute based on supply/demand, just like gas prices are. After all, a cloudy day may reduce solar output, and prices should rise accordingly.
- ComputerGuru 7y agoHere in in Illinois we have ComEd which has a RRTP program with “real-time” pricing for residential customers based on supply and demand. I’m not sure if it’s true real-time but current price in 5-minute resolutions.
- WalterBright 7y agoThat sounds like the right kind of system. The next step is to build this awareness into things like the HVAC system, the refrigerator, the car charger, etc. Finally, a point to having internet connected appliances!
