Whilst this would be an easy way of going about it (I receive those phishing emails too), it probably only takes a handful of people at major academic institutions to exfiltrate basically everything sci-hub needs. Anyone at my university could plug into a wired Ethernet port anywhere on campus and they’d get a whitelisted IP for most journals, and it couldn’t possibly be traced back to them except for maybe CCTV. A random raspi on the lan would never get picked up by our security team.
