Unfortunately, with any specialization comes a sense of superiority and, oftentimes, extreme smugness. I'm guilty of it myself at times. Hopefully reading this post causes some of us to do a bit of reflection and introspection because being an asshole to those who aren't on your level, on any topic, can be very damaging to the advancement of said field. It tends to create a clique-like atmosphere of those who are in and those who aren't, and discourages others from trying to pursue it.
