Can't wait for this to come out and to build a monster 12-core 24-thread remote vscode server , paired with one of the new pcie4 nvme drives ( 5gbps read/4gbps writes ) and then and only then will I be able to finally open up the node_modules folder while running slack at the same time cheers.
- nevi-me 7y agoTaking about remote vscode, I'm failing to use it pleasantly from a home fiber connection to my Xeon server, more than average latency and regular disconnects. I was hoping that such a setup would keep me going for a few more months; my old i7 laptop from 2013 no longer copes with my workload, mostly compiling Rust code. Zen 2 seems like it'll be pricy in my country for a while, and I'd have really loved a decent AMD laptop with mobile Zen 2 chips. Does anyone know if laptop chips are planned, and is there an expected timeline? Thanks
- soulnothing 7y ago2x00u is zen i.e. 1800x/1700x with a few tweaks 3x00u/h is zen+ (2700x,2600x) i.e. not this Zen2 architecture The Zen2 models are rumored to be announced early next year. I have the Lenovo A485 (2700u) it's mostly in line with an i5 8th gen. But with better on board graphics. If you run Linux the support is generally flaw less. The big caveat is less energy efficient at idle. The big changes coming next year should be USB4 (thunderbolt). As a number of X570 motherboards now have thunder bolt. It's all rumor and here say at this point. Initially I felt the 2700u wasn't worth the price. But after time, and active patches from AMD to the Linux kernel. It's been doing really well.
- petedoyle 7y agoThe 3000 series that shipped yesterday is Zen 2
- singingboyo 7y agoAs I understand it, they're only shipping desktop chips. Laptop chips will come later.
- bryanlarsen 7y ago3X00U shipped in January and is zen+ https://www.notebookcheck.net/AMD-details-12-nm-Ryzen-7-3700U-Zen-APU-to-compete-against-the-14-nm-Intel-Core-i7-8565U.415941.0.html https://www.notebookcheck.net/AMD-details-12-nm-Ryzen-7-3700...
- soulnothing 7y agoEven the 3000G series is zen+ 12nm. The desktop APUs and laptop lag behind. Which is unfortunate because that is where a lot of the market is.
- rbanffy 7y agoIf having an in-house server is your thing, there are plenty beefy rackmount units available on Ebay, from multi-blade clusters to single-image 8-way machines. Single thread performance will be worse, but throughput is still pretty impressive. Also, multi-socket machines are much more interesting than single socket ones. Plus, if Rust is your thing, the very non-uniform NUMA topology will be an endless source of cool problems to solve (and I mean that - I love solving odd problems and inventing problems to solve myself is much less interesting).
- goda90 7y agoBut watch out for those electricity bills.
- nevi-me 7y agoElectricity in my country is too high to justify a server/rack at home. I've thought of a desktop, but if I'm going to spend a lot, I was thinking of a replacement laptop
- JaimeThompson 7y agoWhat level of power consumption would be acceptable for you in watts per hour?
- geezerjay 7y agoAMD's Ryzen 3700X has a TDP of 64W. You'd be hard pressed to find a desktop processor that outputs less than that.
- zamadatix 7y ago3900X released yesterday :)
