I was part of a large layoff at a company when I was just out of college. Nobody knew it was coming. We had a few products that were struggling, but it felt like things were turning around.
They basically had an all hands meeting for everybody in our office. We went to the main auditorium and the CEO gets up and basically says, "The company has been struggling so we're closing this office. Please hand your ID to the security people as you leave. Details will follow about how to get your personal belongings mailed back to you."
And that was it. Pretty brutal to say the least. Some 400 jobs just evaporated in a few minutes. It was an eye opener for me on working for a medium sized company. You just never know when it could be your last day.
