With a president that openly labels the press the enemy of the people?
> If it were possible to transcend parties and vote just for candidates that represented my nuanced beliefs, I would switch in a heartbeat.
It's impossible. Everyone will have their nuanced beliefs and no candidate will match perfectly except in rare circumstances.
- antidesitter 7y agoYou’re equating the president with conservatism?
- traderjane 7y agoIsn't the American president a barometer or descriptive reflection of the democratic population? Or does one define American conservatism by reciting a prescription of what people ought be when they say they're conservative? Similarly I presume the rise of Boris Johnson with Brexit is a reflection of the British people, regardless of whether he has his conservative credentials in order.
- antidesitter 7y ago> Isn't the American president a barometer or descriptive reflection of the democratic population? For a sufficiently loose definition of “reflection”, yes. For a sufficiently tight definition of “reflection”, no. > does one define American conservatism by reciting a prescription of what people ought be when they say they're conservative One defines conservatism by a set of values and policies. The same goes for liberalism, fascism, communism, environmentalism, nationalism, etc.
- umvi 7y ago> With a president that openly labels the press the enemy of the people? With a president that has appointed more 1st/2nd amendment-protecting federal appellate judges than any other president, you mean?
- ntsplnkv2 7y agoWith a president who has done nothing to protect a journalist from being blatantly murdered? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Assassination_of_Jamal_Khashoggi https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Assassination_of_Jamal_Khashog... Yea, what a champion of the first amendment. He certainly had that journalist's back...
- masonic 7y agoExplain how the USA has jurisdiction in Turkish territory.
- ntsplnkv2 7y ago1st, Turkey would've gladly assisted the US in this case, and urged the US for action. 2nd, jurisdiction is irrelevant. Saudi Arabia benefits from many deals regarding arms with the US. There are other ways to protect US citizens from being murdered. And it would have the full support of congress. But yea, keep making excuses.
- antidesitter 7y ago> Turkey would've gladly assisted the US in this case What case? After the assassination? > and urged the US for action What action? When? > There are other ways to protect US citizens from being murdered. Khashoggi was not a US citizen.
