Any subsidies solar receives is a tiny fraction of what oil, gas and coal still receive today, without even factoring in all.the subsidies they've received over many years, or the ton of money spent on geopolitics in order to secure fossil fuel supply lines. Or the subsidies and damage they cause when they leak all over the place destroying entire eco systems.
And yeah, the massive subsidies they've received by not having to pay for polluting the air, as well as being major contributors to climate change.

- cyphar 7y agoAnd the massive "subsidies" given by governments by not prosecuting any criminal or civil charges over the fact that gas and oil companies knew about climate change in the 60s and tried to cover it up.
- p1esk 7y agoWe have a president in the US who does not know/care about climate change in 2019.

Or the subsidies and damage they cause when they leak all over the place destroying entire eco systems. Very true, but also kind of the point. Those subsidies still exist -- we still have to do work to get rid of them, and in the meantime replacing fossil fuels with non-carbon sources is at best slower and at worst plateaus entirely. Moreover, this is the same charge leveled at nuclear. Opponents claim that it's more expensive without exploring why it's more expensive -- and a big part of the reason is because we don't price carbon and then subsidize fossil fuels on top of that. Fix that and all the non-carbon sources become more competitive. But we can't just sensibly conclude that's what needs to be done and then pack up and go home. We've got to actually make it happen first.
