- walrus1066 7y agoHere's the technological aspect of how China oppresses the uighur community: https://www.theguardian.com/news/2019/apr/11/china-hi-tech-war-on-muslim-minority-xinjiang-uighurs-surveillance-face-recognition https://www.theguardian.com/news/2019/apr/11/china-hi-tech-w.... Terrifying stuff, it literally is straight out of a black mirror episode.
- saljam 7y agoThe sheer scale of this is facilitated by technology. We should all be wary of what we build.
- tempguy9999 7y agoI was surprised it was flagged but per the HN guidelines[0] "Off-Topic: Most stories about politics, or crime, or sports, unless they're evidence of some interesting new phenomenon" This surely counts as politics, hence the flag. But also something new and vile, and facilitated by tech. And there's been enough of carefully looking the other way this century and last; we know the consequences. - TaylorAlexander 7y agoI don't understand why people say this. Human rights abuses are "politics"? Why is this politics?
- rqs 7y agoKind reminds me how un-Interneted Chinese people categorize things: - Say China did something bad: "That's political and with intention to 'slander' China, so we shouldn't talk about that" - Supreme leader changed the national constitution so he can basically be a emperor: "Oh that's an internal adjustment of power, and btw we shouldn't talk about that"
- traderjane 7y agoPolitics is the negotiation of power. Aren’t human rights abuses inherently related to matters of power?
