I think the trend of software startup companies to use 3rd-party services to run their business is similar to the JIT (Just-In-Time) practice in manufacturing industry. When something happens in the supply chain, it will affect the whole ecosystem, too much dependency. How many of the startups still run their own servers? Standalone service without database PaaS? No external CDN Javascript libraries? :-)
