It's important to remember that flying was ridiculously unsafe when it first appeared. Now they're the safest form of travel. Not to say that self-driving cars will be ridiculously unsafe when the first commercial service appears, but they share one thing with planes: increased safety is an engineering problem. Every incident that occurs with these vehicles will have tons of data and people looking over that data to fix the issue. Human brains can't be fixed, sensors and computer software can.
