I view them in the context "software can kill people, and can do so at scale." Same way I view the recent Boeing 737 incidents.
- dbbk 7y agoHuman drivers already kill people at scale. Enormous scale. Far greater than that of the incidents of self-driving cars. Ultimately it will come down to, who is safer?
- mamon 7y agoMachine learning models for AVs are uploaded to whole fleet of vehicles, potentially causing thousands of identical accidents. No two humans have identical brains, so every human-caused accident is unique. In other words: human errors do not scale at all, fortunately.
- mr_toad 7y ago> In other words: human errors do not scale at all, fortunately. Worldwide there were over 1.3 million road deaths in 2016. That’s a pretty big scale. Technology, even when deliberately employed to cause death, has rarely managed to cause such carnage.
- dbbk 7y agoI see your point, although I would argue that you could say the same thing about human factors like intoxication. Say there's a big drinking holiday, human-driven deaths go up due to people drink driving. Self-driving cars are immune to that factor.
