why in the world would you ever use the end of a sprint as a hard deadline? That's broken from the get-go.

  Broken, but very very common, IME. All of the agile-phile places that I have had the misfortune to interact with had things like sprint commitments, and etc. Very abusive and quite the opposite of 'people over process'.
