You'd be surprised how many companies have a sink or swim mentality. Many people are just in it for themselves and don't really want to help others, or they just aren't cognizant enough of their surroundings to bother to offer aid. If those that don't want to help need to, it's often full of belittlement. I've been in situations like this, and let me tell you, it sucks. I feel like I could've grown a lot faster if someone just cared enough to work with me on some things I had difficulty with. Makes me have a greater appreciation for culture and communication.
