My Chevy Bolt EV has one of these sound generators that kicks on at low speeds (20mph or below, I believe). It sounds like a small electric fan, like a very quiet hair dryer. I cannot hear it in the cabin unless I have a window rolled down and I am near a sound-reflecting surface, such as a building. I think it's a reasonable compromise.
