I find the national security argument unconvincing, especially for the US, which enjoys an abundance of natural resources. The best thing we can do for national security is be a friend to all nations, rather than world police. Developing multiple lines of trade helps guard against the hostile exporter, but we should be asking why they are hostile in the first place. The best thing we can do for our agriculture is to allow the free market to allocate land, labor, and capital to their best and highest use, which is probably a lot different than the use allocated to them by lobbyists, cronies, and bureaucrats.
