I wish I could move to Wayland, but I make heavy use of X-only automation tools ( https://github.com/autokey/autokey https://github.com/autokey/autokey for keyword expansion and cross-app macros, and wmctrl/xdotool for window switching using https://github.com/ronjouch/marathon https://github.com/ronjouch/marathon ) and nothing similar exists under Wayland.
So far, it doesn't look like similar tools are planned, and neither GNOME nor Sway offer these features I'm looking for :-/ .
- AnIdiotOnTheNet 7y agoOh, I was going to mention Sway too, since of all the compositors I've seen it is the only one that seems to care about replicating such functionality. Is it really still that lacking on the automation front?

- ndarwincorn 7y agoI thought Gnome shell supported wmctrl/EWMH?
- ronjouch 7y agoGnome Shell under X is totally fine with wmctrl. But not under Wayland. And I didn't know about EWMH, but https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Extended_Window_Manager_Hints https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Extended_Window_Manager_Hints reads: "Extended Window Manager Hints, a.k.a. NetWM or Net WM,[1] is an X Window System standard for window managers. It defines various interactions between window managers, utilities, and applications, all part of an entire desktop environment. It builds on the functionality of the Inter-Client Communication Conventions Manual (ICCCM)." , well we come to the same conclusion: it's Xorg-only and won't fly under Wayland. Or am I missing something?
- nsajko 7y agoThe Wayland people do not want such features. See my comments here: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=20308011 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=20308011
