- tzs 7y agoWasn't a big part of "old school actual investigation" looking at the communications of suspects?
- magduf 7y agoYes, by doing things like putting "bugs" in their homes or workplaces to listen in on them. There's nothing stopping the authorities from doing this now, and in fact, it's even easier now with the level of miniaturization we have now.
- umvi 7y agoBugging peoples' homes without their consent seems like an equally egregious privacy violation
- LinuxBender 7y agoThat sounds like a job for Alexa!
- gerytu 7y agoOr the cell phone or computer or fitbit or smart meter or doorbell or nest or television or maybe all of these combined, and all those of your friends or relatives or neighbors, also combined.
- magduf 7y agoThat's why they have warrants.
- mrguyorama 7y agoOnly if they can find it.
- eeZah7Ux 7y agoNo, investigation existed way before phones.
- LannisterDebt 7y agoThey tried the "child porn" route up here in Canada and failed. I just posted about it before I saw this response https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=20308373 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=20308373
