I remember using SVN in the early days and it was a huge pain. Some days it even seemed like it caused more problems than it solved. I don't think the situation really improved until Git came along and gave it a kick up the arse. That said, modern SVN is nice to work with in my limited experience but I'm definitely firmly in the Git camp now.
