People love to bash Electron, but what is the alternative?
Is there any other platform that provides:
- Support for the 3 major desktop platforms from one code-base;
- A decent choice of high-level programming languages (there are excellent compile-to-JS options now);
- Reasonable tooling and community support;
- MIT (or similar) license
- barking 7y agoLazarus, Pascal only, but otherwise it ticks your boxes I'd say.
- danieldk 7y agoQt. Supports Linux, macOS, and Windows. Supports at least one high-level programming language very well (Python). Has good tooling and a lot of support. It's LGPL, which is fine for most cases. But you could always buy a commercial license.
- golemiprague 7y agoWhat about the web? Electron apps can usually run also as web apps, can QT do that?
- c-smile 7y agoSciter (https://sciter.com https://sciter.com) - Support for the 3 major desktop platforms from one code-base; - A decent choice of high-level programming languages... C/C++, Go, Rust, C# and other .NETs, Delphi, Python as host languages. - Reasonable tooling and community support Whatever host language provides. - License: Sciter is free to use in binary form. Contained in single dll/so/dylib without external dependencies. Size of DLL is 5-10 mb. Can be statically linked into host (C/C++) application to create monolithic executable.
