Plenty of people at 18 have the personal responsibility and financial awareness to not get a useless degree in exchange for a massive amount of debt. > That's how progress goes: we give the younger ones a better chance than we did. Culture matters. Instilling a sense of personal and financial responsibility in the next generation is the best thing we can do to help them. Giving the most irresponsible people of our generation a massive handout is the opposite of that. Think about it, if an entire generation of people who came before you were absolved of tens (or hundreds!) of thousands of dollars of bad debt, why on earth would you think it was a good idea to pay off your debt and instead not just wait around for the same handout?
