There was a lot of progress on the codec part by opendata27 but as you can read in the blogpost, he dissapeared sadly. The same audio codec is also used for a bunch of sony phones with the same soc (like the Sony Xperia Z2) and Sony does contribute to the mainline kernel so there's hope there.
